How It Began: A History Of The Modern World
A thrilling podcast about the History of the Modern World. Humanity has been hard at work for centuries to empower itself with better tools and insights, from science and surgery to electricity and the Internet, and this series celebrates the history of those triumphs. Compared to our ancestors, we live like superheroes and sorcerers, endowed with powers they could never have imagined. But how did we achieve all this? Historian Brad Harris tackles that question head on, revealing how the most important scientific, technological, and cultural advancements in history began, and inspiring us to keep reaching for new historical triumphs along the way.
Brad Harris received his PhD in the history of science and technology from Stanford University in 2015. During his time at Stanford, Brad was selected by his peers two years in a row to be the Department of History’s graduate student representative, he was nominated for best graduate student teacher of the year in 2013 for a seminar he designed and taught on the Industrial Revolution, and he won the Society for the History of Technology’s Best Dissertation Video Pitch national contest in 2014. His completed dissertation, which explained how resource anxiety drove plastics engineering, was highly acclaimed by his faculty readers who nominated it for the Department of History’s annual prize for the best-written dissertation in 2015. Despite his early success in academia, however, Brad decided not to pursue a career as a university-based professor in large part due to the increasingly reactive politics of campus culture. Instead, Brad seized an opportunity to join a San Francisco-based technology company as Director of Operations.
Yet, after nearly two years of working in the startup tech industry, Brad found himself yearning to apply his skills as a professional historian once more. So when his startup team was offered positions at Uber, Brad opted instead to start his own company, Debago Broadcasting, LLC, in order to bring his passion for historical storytelling to life through his podcast, How It Began: A History of the Modern World. Debuting in the spring of 2017, How It Began’s audience is growing quickly and the show has already received dozens of five-star reviews on iTunes. Brad continues to work on the show full-time from his home studio in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains of northern California, where he spends his free time helping his fiancée’s family operate an Arabian horse ranch.
